I logged onto Tumblr this morning to discover that my favourite author of all time has departed for the world beyond, and I think he took a massive part of my heart with him.

I honestly feel numb and empty. Sir Pterry was easily the biggest influence on my writing style and I don’t think I would be half of what I am now if it wasn’t for his genius.

The first book of his that I read all the way through was The Last Hero. I remember being entranced by the artworks, based off his rich descriptions of the Disc and its inhabitants and attributes. It’s only recently that I’ve come to fully appreciate just how incredible an author he was. Some of my Tumblr followers may have seen the edit I made where I set a quote from Men at Arms to edited screenshots of Storm Hawks, and reading tags on the reblogs, I saw people really liked the quote.

But honestly? That one quote was only the tip of the most vast iceberg ever to exist. I’m serious: Discworld alone has changed me in a way that I will never be able to fully comprehend.

All I can bring myself to say right now is that I hope Sir Pterry’s passing truly was as peaceful as I’ve heard, and that Death was just as stunned by this happening as I was.

As the man himself said, a man is not dead while his name is still spoken.

Which is why I say; GNU Terry Pratchett. May your genius last a thousand years and far, far beyond.
